Big Lagoon State Park
Sitting on the northern shoreline of its namesake, Big Lagoon State Park’s 655 upland acres separate the mainland from Perdido Key and the Gulf of Mexico. Natural communities, ranging from saltwater marshes to pine flatwoods, attract a wide variety of birds, especially during the spring and fall migrations, while the beaches, shallow bays, nature trails and open woodlands offer splendid opportunities for nature study. The park also beckons visitors to camp, swim, fish, boat, canoe and hike. Crabbing in the shallow waters of Big Lagoon is a popular activity as well. The West Beach picnic area, shaded by pines and oaks, is just the place to enjoy a relaxing meal.Surrounded by beautiful pine flats, this campground has 75 sites, each equipped with water, a picnic table, electricity and fire ring. Three full-service restrooms and a dump station are available. Pets are welcome in the campground. Maximum RV length is 45'. Now this is camping! We stayed at this park in 2009 while exploring the Florida coastline. The park is just amazing and is right on the waterway so you can fish or go swimming any time you want. The rates were reasonable, the park was very clean and it is conveniently located. Shopping is nearby if you need groceries or supplies but it is far enough off the road that you don't have any traffic noise.
We took the scooters all over the area, traveling way farther than most people would dare on a 50cc bike. We went as far east as Navarre Beach and west until the land ended at Fort Pickens. It was funny when we would pass people riding those rented Chinese scooters... they would flag us down and ask where we rented our awesome Honda Ruckus scooters. We had to tell them we owned them and they were not rentals. You know, having the scooters to travel around on when camped somewhere is just awesome. Not only are they big fun, we get 100 MPG!
Here are the pictures we took while in the park and the surrounding area. Now before anyone says anything, Florida does not require helmets on adult riders so we went without them the majority of the time. No matter what your opinion may be on helmet use with scooters, the choice is ours and not yours. When someone else makes your everyday choices for you, they call that communism.
