Petrified Forest National Park

After waking from a good night's rest in Holbrook, Arizona, we headed on into the nearby Petrified Forest National Park. Now for some reason, we had visions of a "standing" petrified forest, but we knew that wasn't the case. We also expected to see far more petrified trees than we did, but I guess all those years of people looting them has taken its toll. Maybe there are more to see on the hiking trails.

The gate guard really, REALLY stressed for us not to try to smuggle out any pieces of petrified wood and that the penalties are quite severe. We had no intention of doing that so we began our drive through the park. We took pictures along the way, took all the little side roads and saw all that we could see without doing any walking. It is a nice park to drive through but it really isn't that exciting, which I guess is why we only saw two other cars the whole time we were in there. After a while, we started looking forward to seeing the Painted Desert, which was at the other end of the park.

We visited here in 07/2014.
